When going for body contouring surgery, it is important to maintain proper nutrition before the procedure. This is especially true for patients who have recently experienced massive weight loss. The reduced calorie intake for these people makes them susceptible to malnutrition issues.
Maintaining proper nutrition reduces the risk of complications, speeds up the healing process, and improves scar quality. Cosmetic surgeons who have been giving their patients supplements containing necessary vitamins and minerals before surgery have noticed a decrease in complications and improved healing after body contouring.
A recent study has documented this result. Doctors compared a control group of body contouring patients who did not receive nutritional supplements prior to surgery with a group of patients who did receive extra nutrients.
Approximately 66% of patients in the control group experienced complications after surgery, while only 19% of patients receiving supplements had similar problems.
Body contouring continues to remain one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in our country, especially among people who have experienced massive weight loss. In 2007, 67,000 body contouring procedures were performed on people who recently underwent massive weight loss.
