I guess matters of love, marriage, divorce, and personal injury are handled a little differently in China than they are in this country. Recently, a man from northern China divorced his wife and then sued her for being ugly. The crazy part of this story is not that he sued his wife for being ugly; it’s that he actually won the lawsuit.
If you are wondering how being ugly is a punishable offense or how this man wasn’t held responsible for choosing to marry an ugly woman in the first place, then you are a person of sound logic. However, as with all stories recounted on this blog, there are rather unusual circumstances which defy common logic.
When this man, named Jian Feng, married his wife, all he saw was ravishing beauty. And in fact, based on the picture I’ve seen of her, she is quite attractive. But she had a dirty little secret that she was keeping from Jian Feng, and it wasn’t until they had a child that this secret was brought to light.
The Immaculate Deception
When the baby girl was born, she was “incredibly ugly” (Jian Feng’s words, not mine – I’ve never actually seen this baby). Not only was she ugly, but she didn’t look anything like either of her parents. Jian Feng was outraged, and he even accused his wife of cheating on him.
At this point, his wife felt compelled to come clean about her “true nature.” Apparently, the baby was in fact the father’s, and it did look like the mother – just not the version of the mother that Jian Feng knew.
It seems that Jian Feng’s baby-mama’s beauty was nothing but a ruse. She was born an ugly duckling and before meeting Jian Feng, she had undergone nearly $100,000 worth of plastic surgery in order to improve her appearance. I guess it worked.
Did she do it so that she could rope in a husband and avoid the long, lonely life of a homely spinster? Did she do it just to feel better about herself? We will never know, and it really isn’t all that important. But it’s obvious she had to really hate her appearance to plunk down $100,000 on plastic surgery.
I’ve only seen the head shot, so I’m not sure if she had breast augmentation or a tummy tuck along with her many facial plastic surgery procedures. It’s possible that she had a rocking body to go along with her “butter” face. But regardless, the surgeon did a pretty good job.
The Price of Betrayal
This deception was more than Jian Feng could take, and he promptly filed for divorce. However, simply moving on with his life was not enough. Jian Feng was determined to punish his ex-wife for her “wrong-doing.” He sued her for being ugly, claiming that she convinced him to marry her under false pretenses.
So what kind of a price tag should be put on this betrayal? A judge in China felt her actions were egregious enough to warrant a whopping $120,000 price tag.
Ouch. Six figures for failing to warn your husband you had plastic surgery. Seems a bit harsh. I’m just glad I don’t have to abide by the Chinese justice system.
Can’t See the Forest for the Trees
I suppose it’s not really my place to judge a man for his reasons to leave his wife, but I’m going to do it anyway. As the old expression goes, it is clear he can’t see the forest for the trees.
According to all the accounts I’ve read, Jian Feng was happily married up until this incident was brought to light. And it seems like he was pretty happy with the way his wife looked post-plastic surgery. So I really don’t see what his problem is.
Who cares how she looked before they met? What should be important is how she looks now, and it appears the bionic bride became a foxy lady after her surgery.
And I will say this, if he can’t love his daughter simply because she’s ugly, then he’s a horrible human being and he should be forced to pay his daughter a $120,000 dirt bag surcharge. Plus, if her hideous looks really bother her, the baby can follow in mommy’s footsteps and get a massive plastic surgery makeover once she becomes an adult. Maybe she could even put her dad’s $120,000 dirt bag surcharge aside for her plastic surgery fund. I’d say that would be a fitting use for the money.
