More plastic surgery clients then ever before are teens. In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported a twenty percent increase in the number of cosmetic surgery procedures performed on teenagers between the years 2000 and 2004. The cosmetic surgery community is meeting the new statistics with mixed feelings.
Many aesthetic surgeons are pleased with the new results. Why should teenagers live with bodies that they are unhappy with? The sooner a patient has a body that they like, the sooner they can increase their self-esteem and self-image.
Others, however, believe that teens should wait before getting a cosmetic procedure done. Many teens are in an experimental phase where they are willing to change the appearance of their bodies without really wanting a cosmetic surgery procedure. Other teens are turning to dangerous methods in an attempt to improve their physical appearance. The number of teens who frequent illegal laser treatment centers is high. These centers offer cheap laser hair removal or skin resurfacing procedures with unsafe lasers and unqualified people. Fortunately for these teens, there are approved lasers and hair-removal techniques that many plastic surgeons offer. Whether or not plastic surgery should be offered to teens is a matter of opinion.Whatever the view however, the cosmetic surgery community must face the growing demand for plastic surgery among teenage patients.
