Those who have gone through cosmetic surgery know that, in many cases, the post-surgery recovery isn’t very pleasant. After all, having yourself cut open, inserted with breast implants, or had the fat sucked out of you isn’t like a day at the park. It’s painful and it takes time to recover completely. You’re swollen and bruised; you need to wear bandages; you need a prescription to help cope with the pain. These are reactions to a most unnatural procedure. Probably the only way to get through the post-surgical recovery is to remember that the pain eventually goes away, and then you can get on with admiring your cosmetic surgeon’s good work rather than cursing their name for the pain they helped to inflict on you.
Having said that, there are a number of things besides pain killers and ice that will help you through the days and weeks of recovery. One of the things you might want to invest in is something called Arnica Montana (your cosmetic surgeon might also recommend this). Arnica Montana, also known as Sneezewort, Leopard’s Bane, Mountain Tobacco, Mountain Arnica, and Common Arnica, is a perennial plant native to Europe. Besides looking good as a small to mid-sized plant with orange to yellow flowers in your garden or food for butterfly larvae, Arnica Montana has been known for its healing properties since the 15th century to treat bruising, soreness, and swelling – three things you most definitely will have after a cosmetic surgical procedure.
There are many companies that have created different formulations for just this purpose, including Boiron, Boerick & Tafel, and Hyland. Taking this may significantly reduce the time it takes to heal, or it may simply ease some of the discomfort you feel. While Arnica Montana is most often rubbed into the skin, there are certain low-dose formulas that you can put under your tongue. But, keep reading to find out if this is really the best way to use it. Your cosmetic surgeon may suggest either way. This is best for those who have gone through abdominoplasty, breast augmentation, or liposuction, however, any procedure that leaves bruising and swelling may find a use for this.
Warning
Though Arnica Montana can be used as a healing agent, just like anything else, too much can harm you. Ingesting different parts of the plant in its raw form can cause intestinal bleeding, cramping, tachycardia, and, in extreme cases, cause coma and death. It should never be swallowed.
When used as a topical solution, reactions can include burning, skin irritation, or contact dermatitis.
You should obviously consult with your cosmetic surgeon or physician before using this. Still, while the official jury is still out, Arnica Montana is believed to be one of the most natural ways to help your body recover from something as traumatic as cosmetic surgery.
