In 2006 one Dr. William Brennan received a patent for small micro-implants about the size of M-and-Ms. He is a neurosurgeon and cosmetic surgeon of over 20 years’ experience and began working on these micro-implants in 2002.
He is currently working to prepare for application to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval. Testing studies have not yet begun. A research study was done by a Los Angeles company to assess how much demand there would be for this type of breast implant, and it came up with the figure of 60% of women who would prefer these to the more familiar large implants.
Potential Advantages of Micro-Implants
A breast augmentation surgery would use hundreds of these small silicone pieces. They look like translucent bubbles and after placement they would cluster together coherently in the pocket made for them by the cosmetic surgeon.
- Incision could be far smaller — about five millimeters instead of the current two inches or so.
- Scars, being so small, would be virtually invisible.
- Recovery would be quicker.
- There would be less pain or discomfort.
- Your new appearance would look very natural.
- The cost would be about the same as the current silicone implants.
- You would later be able to have more micro-implants added to increase breast size. That would be a quick out-patient procedure.
The FDA testing process can take several years, going through its three phases. So nobody can have these implants done for a while yet. If you are looking for an experienced and highly-qualified cosmetic surgeon in your area, please use the map on this page, or the form on this page.
