One of the biggest concerns with facial injuries and facial surgery is scarring. We have known for years that tension on a healing wound will cause a more prominent scar by constantly pulling the wound apart as it heals. Preventing tension on a facial wound can be very difficult, but now it looks like we may a very simple solution.
BOTOX injections are currently used to reduce wrinkles. They work by relaxing the muscles used when making facial expressions and crinkling the skin. In a recent study, doctors tried using BOTOX injections when closing forehead wounds, to see if relaxing the muscles that would normally pull on the wounds would improve healing. 31 patients were involved, some received BOTOX and others were injected with saline. Six months later those who had received BOTOX had significantly better looking results than those who did not.
