INFORMATION ABOUT RHINOPLASTY – NOSE SURGERY
Rhinoplasty is any type of nose surgery performed to reshape the nose, and it is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures. Whether reshaping the nose for aesthetic reasons, correcting birth defects or breathing problems, or fixing and injury, rhinoplasty may be able to correct the problems you have with your nose.
Rhinoplasty is commonly performed in order to correct many problems, such as:
- The size of the nose
- The shape of the tip
- The shape of the bridge
- The span of the nostrils
- The angle between the nose and upper lip
- Birth defects
- Upper respiratory problems
For many people rhinoplasty is used for aesthetic reasons, however, it can also be used for reconstructive purposes. Although rhinoplasty will not necessarily provide you with your ideal, it can improve and enhance your self-confidence and appearance.
The rhinoplasty procedure is performed with either local anesthetics and sedatives so that the area will be numb and you will be relaxed, or under general anesthesia so that you will sleep through the procedure.
Depending on your procedure and the results that you want from it, the plastic surgeon may employ several different techniques to give you the nose you want. First, the skin is separated from the bone and cartilage, and then the plastic surgeon will remove some of the bone to reduce the hump and create a slimmer bridge.
Cartilage in the tip of the nose can be trimmed to give you the shape that you would like, and if you are having your nostrils worked on, the plastic surgeon will remove small sections of the nose to bring them closer together. Lastly, by trimming the septum (the piece of skin the separate your nostrils), the angle of the nose can be changed.
Following the procedure, a splint will be taped to the nose to ensure that the bone and cartilage heal in the correct shape. For the first couple days, the area will be a bit swollen and bruised, but this will subside. Patients are usually up and returning to most of their normal activities in just a couple of days. Patients with glasses will have to wear contacts or prop them on their fore head or cheeks until the nose in completely healed.
Rhinoplasty is a common plastic surgery procedure that is performed on thousands of people each year. However, this does not mean that everyone can or should have the procedure performed on them. The ideal rhinoplasty candidate should be physically and psychologically healthy and they should have realistic expectations for the results.
Also, age is a factor when choosing to have a rhinoplasty procedure performed. Younger people, such as teenagers, should wait until they have a had their growth spurt around 14 or 15 for girls, and a bit later for boys. Also, younger people need to take into account their emotional and social maturity before having the procedure.
If you are interested in having a rhinoplasty ( nosejob ) procedure, schedule a visit with a plastic surgeon near you. They will work and discuss with you to determine the results you are looking for and what rhinoplasty can provide. Also, your plastic surgeon will answer any questions that you may have about the procedure and inform you about any risks or limitations associated with rhinoplasty.
