DERMAL FILLERS
No one’s perfect. But thanks to a little help from cosmetic dermal fillers, we can all get a little closer to that ideal.
Dermal fillers include different “injectables,” which are used to augment the facial tissue in designated areas. If you suffer from the facial changes
associated with aging, trauma, scars or disease, dermal fillers can provide that little boost to fill out a whole new you.
Here are some of the most common types of FDA-approved dermal fillers. All are injected into the skin via needle and are generally quick, in-office or outpatient procedures. Discuss with your doctor which option is best for you.
Collagen: Bovine collagen was the first filler approved in the United States for soft-tissue augmentation, and it remains the most commonly used dermal filler. Zyderm I, Zyderm II and Zyplast bovine collagens, derived from the hides of isolated, domestic cattle herds, are sterile, purified products that mimic the collagen found in the human body. Collagen comes in different thicknesses depending on the type if facial issue you’re trying to correct. This reliable filler works on fine lines around the eyes, deep facial furrows and acne scars. It can also enhance the lips. Results can last from three months to a year or more.
Fat Graft: This intelligent, proven procedure takes excess fat from one area of the body, such as the abdomen, to help fill in deep creases around the nose, mouth and chin; contour hollow areas or facial pads that have deteriorated with age; or smooth out scars from acne. While it requires a slightly longer procedure than with standard fillers, fat transfers use the body’s own natural material, which effectively extends the life of the contoured effect. In spite of some expected re-absorption, fat grafting can last for up to three years.
Restylane: This Swedish-made clear filler is a non-animal, biodegradable gel based on a natural substance called hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the body. The biosynthetic agent, developed from bacterial fermentation and known for its smooth, non-clumping application, is often used to treat large folds around the mouth or acne scars; enhance the lips or chin area; and fill in hollow cheeks or other facial areas. The results typically last up to one year.
Hylaform: Like Restylane, Hylaform is also a hyaluronic, acid-based gel filler. However Hylaform is extracted from the dermis of animals, namely domestic fowl. This long-term material also offers a smooth application and is used to treat mid- to deep-dermis conditions such as wrinkles and folds, especially between the eyes and mouth area, and most types of scars. Hylaform Plus modifies deep folds and facial contours, and enhances lips. Results last approximately three months in the lips and six months in other areas of the face.
Millions of people use dermal fillers. And there are more than dozen types of dermal agents designed to treat every type of facial irregularity. Finding the right one will help you make the most informed decision about how to supplement or smooth your deep wrinkles, unsightly scars or hollow cheekbones.
