Radiesse

Radiesse is a long-lasting injectable filler, with results lasting over one year in recent clinical trials. It has a unique design that is responsible for its long-lasting results whose full length of correction has not yet been determined.

Radiesse is biocompatible and hypoallergenic, so there is no need for allergy testing before your receive treatment.  Radiesse is a composite filler made up of calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres and methycellulose carrier gel. Calcium hydroxylapatite is a mineral found naturally in your bones and teeth, and has long been used as a hard-tissue filler for bones. After doctors observed its high biocompatibility and its resilience against absorption, this soft-tissue filler was developed.  Once injected into areas requiring filling, the mineral microspheres stay in place as a framework for the collagen which your body will produce to replace the methycellulose, which is quickly abosrbed.  Methylcellulose is a methyl ester of the familiar plant fiber, a common food thickener.

Radiesse can be used to reduce wrinkles, folds, and sunken areas of the face, especially nasolabial folds. Radiesse is currently the filler with the longest clinically verified results, although this may change as its competitor Artefill, which uses non-digestible plastic miscrospheres, becomes more commonly used. Some patients have been shown to receive results for up to seven years, making it a cost-effective option, even though it is more expensive per treatment than the more ephemeral hyaluronic acid-based fillers such as Restylane, and Juvéderm

The procedure

Like other injectable treatments Radiesse injections only take 15 to 30 minutes to perform.

  • Numbing cream may be applied to the area
  • Small amounts of Radiesse are injected under the skin to achieve an appropriate level of correction
  • Full results are seen in about one week

Recovery

Swelling can be more than experienced with hyaluronic acid fillers, especially Juvéderm, but generally subsides in less than one week. Your pain should be minimal. You can resume most of your normal activities immediately after the procedure, but strenuous activity should be avoided where possible.

Comparison with Other Injectables

Radiesse is a suitable treatment for most areas where other injectable fillers are used.  It works well as a wrinkle correction treatment and filling sunken areas of the face, is not recommended for lip augmentation.  In addition, it cannot treat dynamic wrinkles, such as forehead corrugations, glabellar lines, and crow's feet, which are all caused by conditioned muscle contractions and can be treated with Botox Cosmetic injections.  Because of its long-lasting results, Radiesse is also not recommended as a front-line filler.  Instead, it is recommended that patients try less long-lasting treatments first to be sure they like the results they achieve with fillers before committing to Radiesse injections.
